QB still undecided for Huskies’ opener

UConn coach Randy Edsall said last week there was still competition among his quarterbacks in advance of the season opener at Fresno State.

Now just days ahead of the program’s first game since 2019, Edsall is not ready to name a starter.

UConn released a depth chart Monday, but neither Jack Zergiotos nor Steve Krajewski was listed with the first team. The depth chart listed an OR between the sophomores, which means fans may need to wait until Saturday afternoon to know who will be taking snaps.

“Those guys have been competing and are still competing,” Edsall said last week. “When it’s time for us to put out a depth chart and everything else, I’ll be very comfortable with whoever the quarterback is but I’ll also know this — whoever the starter is going to be, the guy who’s the backup has got to be ready to play as well.

“We’ll be more than capable with our starter, we’ll be more than capable with whoever the backup is going to be. The competition has been good. We’ll continue to see where that all goes as we get in here with the game week.”

Zergiotis, a true sophomore from Montreal, played 10 games as a freshman in 2019. Krajewski, a redshirt sophomore, appeared in four games in 2019 and one game in 2018.

UConn also has North Carolina State transfer Micah Leon, who missed the 2019 season with an injury, along with freshman Tyler Phommachanh of Stratford and Avon Old Farms.

It’s worth noting that Krajewski is listed as the first-team holder on the kick team.

Also listed as first team: freshman running back Nick Carter, who is slotted next to senior Kevin Mensah.

It’s expected to be over 100 degrees at kickoff Saturday, when UConn plays its first game as an independent program. It will be UConn’s first trip to California and the first time the team has opened on the road since playing at Michigan on Sept. 4, 2010.

The kickoff is 2 p.m. and the game will be televised by CBS Sports Network (Rich Waltz, Aaron Taylor and Jenny Dell).
