STAMFORD — Democratic mayoral candidate and state Rep. Caroline Simmons announced Tuesday that she and her husband are expecting their third son.

Simmons and her husband Art Linares, a former Republican state senator, have two sons: Teddy, 2, and Jack, 1. Her announcement that another son is on the way comes a week before the primary election between her and Mayor David Martin.

“It really doesn’t change anything at all,” Simmons told Hearst Connecticut Media. “I’ve been blessed to have already had the experience running for office as state representative pregnant twice before and successfully won both of those elections.”

Simmons was first elected to the state House in 2014. She represents the 144th District, which includes a chunk of the center of the city.

Simmons noted that while raising her sons, she has co-chaired the General Assembly’s Commerce Committee — “working late nights in Hartford” — and at the same time maintained a job at Yale University.

“We’re in this remarkable time when there’s world leaders and congresswomen and women mayors across the country and even in our state that are giving birth while in office, and I’m excited about the idea of normalizing this and showing women that this is possible,” she said. “And it’s only going to make me a stronger champion for families.”

She said she is preparing for a win in November and will have a plan for her first 100 days in office at the ready. She would be Stamford’s first female mayor if she wins the election.

“I’m confident that, just like so many women do across our city and across the world, juggling work and family… I’ll be able to do both and execute on our agenda for the city,” Simmons said.
