Stamford schools report 55 new COVID cases in first two weeks

- By Ignacio Laguarda

STAMFORD — Stamford schools were averaging five people with positive COVID-19 tests every day through the first two weeks of the new school year.

While the first day of school was two weeks ago, there were only seven school days over that span, as there was no school for three days last week.

According to the district’s COVID-19 tracker, 31 people tested positive for the virus over the first five days of the school year, and 23 people were ordered to quarantine because of “school-related exposure.”

The district does not specify which cases are of students and which involve staff, nor does it break down the figures by school or grade levels.

Last week, when there were only two school days, there were 24 new people testing positive for the coronavirus, and 41 people told to quarantine as a result.

Overall, there have been 55 people testing positive and 64 people in quarantine since school re-opened.

Stamford Public Schools debuted a COVID-19 tracker last year in late September. The first reported numbers were 10 cases on Sept. 24, and 58 people in quarantine over the previous seven days.

By June this year, the district saw a total of 1,267 positive cases of COVID-19, for an average of about 60 per school over the school year. That figure was about 6.75 percent of the total staff and students in Stamford.

The number of quarantine requests was 3,479, a figure that was roughly a fourth of the school system population of students and staff.
