New Canaan celebrates return of Caffeine & Carburetors

- By Grace Duffield

NEW CANAAN — Streets were closed in the village Sunday as automotive enthusiasts came to gaze upon a collection of current luxury and old classic cars as the cherished tradition of Caffeine and Carburetors returned.

Last year’s event was not held due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The event is organized by Doug Zumbach, of Zumbach’s Gourmet Coffee at 77 Pine Street.

In front of the store, Peter Bush, or “the Bushman,” of radio station 95.9 narrates the show. The long-time resident’s voice booms as he described the attributes of each car as they pass by in front of the coffee shop one by one.

Cars range from a vintage Volkswagen bus with matching luggage and Kermit the Frog in a child’s seat to a McClaren model that, according to Bush, was one of fewer than 400 that were produced.

The cars lined sections of Elm Street, South Avenue, Park Street and Pine Street.
