A mom’s advice on the power of words

- Pratibha T. Pandey is a Stamford Parent Leader from the 2020 class of the Parent Leadership Training Institute.

The world is waiting for this. Help those who are struggling to make friends. Play with them, Who are new or shy, go be their friend.

We’ve decorated our children’s wardrobe with new clothes, and surprised them with a new backpacks, supplies, lunchboxes, water bottles and a fresh set of masks and sanitizers (the new normal).

There was one thing we cannot buy but have to pass on to them.

Just before bed, we did a task to prepare for school that is far more important than the others.

I gave them a tube of toothpaste and asked them to squirt it out onto a plate. When they finished, I calmly asked them to put all the toothpaste back in the tube. They exclaimed things such as, “But we can’t!” and “It won’t be like it was before!” I quietly waited for them to finish and said the following:

“You will remember this plate of toothpaste for the rest of your life. Your words have the power of life or death. As you start your school year, you will see just how much weight your words carry. You will have the opportunity to use your words to hurt, demean, slander and wound others.

You will also have the opportunity to use your words to heal, encourage, inspire and love others. You will occasionally make the wrong choice.

Just like this toothpaste, once the words leave your mouth, you can’t take them back. Use your words carefully, my dearest ones.

When others are misusing their words, guard your words. Make the choice every morning that life-giving words will come out of your mouth. Decide tonight that you are going to be a life-giver henceforth.

Be known for your gentleness and compassion. Use your life to give life to a world that so desperately needs it.

Be a friend who pushes others to give their best.

Always be ready to share winning moments.

Set an example so people don’t want to lose you.

Hold each other’s hand so you all can touch, not only the winning line together but the hearts too. Hold each other’s hands and hearts tightly and never let go.

You will never, ever regret choosing kindness.

Go and spread your smiles, your giggles and your kindness.

The world is waiting for this. Help those who are struggling to make friends. Play with them, Who are new or shy, go be their friend.

You never know how much your kind smile can make a difference in someone’s life. Because I know ...

You are efficient.

You are kind.

You are ingenious.

You are creative.

You are great thinkers.

You have endurance.

Because your positivity will be helping other students shape their inner voice, our vibes will be leading them to navigate their moral code. This will be a true celebration of Back to School.

Because all that glitters is ... your golden heart.
