I find the insensitivity of the Stamford Public Schools toward the Jewish community to be appalling. The virtual open house for the elementary schools is scheduled to take place on the evening of Simchat Torah, an important Jewish holiday.
The Jewish tradition is to read the Torah, or as many non-Jews call it, the Old Testament from start to finish in one year. On Simchat Torah, we read the last part of the Torah and immediately start again. The synagogues have family-friendly educational activities on the evening of Simchat Torah especially for Jewish children of elementary school age.
The people at the Stamford Public Schools who arranged the open house are making us choose between a religious and a secular event. Where is the separation of Shull and State?
