Charges against Norwalk council member dismissed

- By Pat Tomlinson

STAMFORD — A Norwalk city councilman has had the charges he was facing dismissed by a judge nearly a year after being arrested.

Kadeem Roberts, 30, had charges of third-degree assault, interfering with a 911 call and disorderly conduct dropped on Wednesday upon completion of a court-ordered family violence education program.

Following the decision, Roberts’ attorney Darnell Crosland said the dismissal is “evidence that Kadeem is a true leader” and the public should “be ashamed” for its attempt to “tear down the great ones.

“He did not speak ill of the process, he made no excuses, and as a man of integrity, he allowed the system to play out,” Crosland said.

Once the charges were dismissed, Roberts thanked his family, his legal team and the community for their support.

Roberts, a member of Norwalk’s Common Council, was arrested Dec. 20 and charged after police were called to a disturbance around 2 a.m.

Lt. Jared Zwickler, then a police spokesman, said at the time that Roberts was giving the woman a ride home “after a night of drinking” when an argument occurred.

When they arrived at their destination, Roberts allegedly threw the victim’s belongings out of the car, and then “mushed” the victim’s face with an open hand, poking the woman in the eye and pulling her hair, according to Zwickler.

The female victim in the case also accused Roberts of stalking her, according to his arrest report.

“She claimed to have had prior incidents with Roberts, but has not reported them to the police due to his status,” responding officer Ramon Tejada wrote in the report.

Roberts has denied the allegations since his initial arrest.
