Fairfield University announced it has extended the contract of men’s basketball coach Jay Young through the 2025-26 season.

Young was hired in 2019 after serving as an assistant at Rutgers. The Stags were 10-17 last season, but they won three games in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament before losing to Iona in the title game.

“I am thrilled to announce this well-deserved extension for Coach Young,” athletic director Paul Schlickmann said in a statement. “It is a reflection of the progress our program has made in just two short but very challenging years under his leadership. We are confident that Coach Young and his staff will continue to elevate Stags Basketball, and that we are on the right path to building a championshipcaliber program that our entire Stags family and Fairfield community can rally around with great pride.”

Young, who was 12-20 in his first season, came to Fairfield after cultivating a strong reputation as an assistant coach and recruiter. He served under Steve Pikiell at Stony Brook and Rutgers, and was head coach at New Haven.

Fairfield will have 14 players back this season, including 10 that made at least one start. The Stags open at Providence on Nov. 9 before hosting Medgar Evers College on Nov. 16 at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport.

The team will play all of its home game at Webster Bank this season as a new on-campus arena is constructed.
