Stamford police seize ‘ghost gun’ in early morning raid
STAMFORD — Police seized an illegal “ghost gun” during an early morning raid on an apartment in downtown Stamford Wednesday.
Capt. Richard Conklin said the city’s Narcotics and Organized Crime squad opened an investigation into Konstantinos E. Papadakos, after they learned he might be in possession of a weapon.
Papadakos, a 20-year-old Stamford resident, has a protective order against him which bars him from possessing any firearms, Conklin said.
Around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday,
Stamford’s Special Response Team and NOC agents executed a search warrant on Papadakos’ Prospect Street home, according to Conklin.
Conklin said they found Papadakos in bed and armed with what turned out to be a loaded handgun inside the apartment. Papadakos was taken into custody without incident and the weapon was seized, Conklin said.
“NOC found that the firearm did not possess serial numbers and was determined to be a ‘ghost gun’ meaning that it was purchased over the internet without being fully functioning. These types of firearms are not stamped with serial numbers and make it virtually impossible to track,” Conklin said Wednesday.
Conklin said authorities have seen an uptick in “ghost guns” in cities including New Haven and Bridgeport. He said police will be investigating the origins of this particular weapon.
Papadakos was charged with criminal possession of a firearm, criminal possession of ammunition, manufacture of a firearm and violation of a standing protective order.
He also had an arrest warrant on file out of Norwalk for unrelated charges.
Papadakos was held on $25,000 bond and was given a court date of Oct. 7.
