- By Tara O'Neill

Connecticut State Police are mourning the recent death of a retired sergeant who served in various positions during his time with the agency.

State police announced Sunday the death of Sgt. Llewellyn “Llew” Rowe Jr. He died on Sept. 7 at the age of 65 after a battle with cancer, state police and his obituary said.

His obituary said Rowe, of Brookfield, died at Regional Hospice in Danbury. He was born Feb. 22, 1956, in Staten Island, N.Y.

Rowe graduated from Newtown High School in 1974 and from Paul Smith’s College in 1976, his obituary said. After graduating, his obituary said, Rowe served as a park ranger for two years before pursuing a career in law enforcement.

He spent two years as a patrolman for the Newtown Police Department before joining the Connecticut State Police. He worked his way from the rank of trooper to sergeant in his 28-year career in law enforcement, his obituary said. During his time with state police, Rowe’s obituary said, he was a member of the SWAT team and a K-9 handler. He was also involved with practical and firearms training for troopers.

After retiring from the state police, the agency said Rowe became an instructor for the Department of Homeland Security. His obituary said it was “a job he truly loved.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family,” state police said.

Rowe is survived by his wife, his daughter, his mother and his sister.

“Llew was an avid hiker, a history buff, and a classic cars enthusiast,” his obituary said. “But above all, he was a devoted family man who was most content spending time with his wife and daughter.”

His obituary said a celebration of life is being planned and will be held at a later date.
