- By Emily Morgan

NORWALK — Tom Hamilton will have about a month to help his successor Lunda Asmani transition into the role of chief financial officer for the city’s public schools. The Norwalk Board of Education approved the appointment of Asmani during its Tuesday meeting, following a national search. His appointment will take effect on Dec. 7, when a board workshop is scheduled for the district’s capital and operating budgets.

The former director of management and budgets for the city of Norwalk, Asmani has served as the chief financial officer for the town of New Canaan since December 2019, according to a district memo. His role included overseeing the development and implementation of financial policies and procedures, managing financial operations, and overseeing the town’s annual budget process and long-range financial plan.

Asmani previously served as New Canaan’s budget director. Before moving to Connecticut, he worked for six years as the assistant city manager of budget and finance for the city of Newton, Kansas. He also served as an adjunct instructor of economics at Butler Community College in Kansas from 2003 to 2016.

Asmani lives in Norwalk. He volunteers as treasurer of Norwalk Mutual Housing and serves on the advisory board of the Norwalk Salvation Army, as a trustee of Grace Baptist Church, and as a board member of Norwalk Community Health Center.

Hamilton announced last month that he planned to retire at the end of the year. He has served as the district’s chief financial officer since 2015 and previously served in the same position for the city of Norwalk for 12 years.

A date and time for Hamilton’s retirement celebration hosted by Norwalk Public Schools has yet to be announced.
