Fifth Conn. team enters national Top 25 poll
The Darien girls lacrosse team continued to reign at No. 1 and a fifth Connecticut squad entered the rankings in the latest Nike/USA Lacrosse National Top 25.
Greenwich Academy joined the ranks at No. 24 following a 10-9 victory over Hotchkiss on Saturday. The Gators have won three straight since an 1110 loss to Sacred HeartGreenwich.
New Canaan moved up three spots to No. 9, Wilton slipped two spots to No. 10, and Sacred HeartGreenwich took one step up to No. 14.Darien (16-0) still leads the pack on the state and national level.
The Blue Wave is the No. 1 seed in the FCIAC tournament, and defeated eighth-seeded Stamford 19-1 in the quarterfinals on Thursday. They’ll face No. 4 seed Greenwich, a team the Wave beat 20-8 on May 15 in the conference semifinals at 4 p.m., Monday, in Greenwich.
A pair of Maryland teams follow Darien in the top three: No. 2 McDonagh and No. 3 St. Paul’s. The Wave defeated St. Paul’s 13-12 in Sparks, MD, earlier this season.
New Canaan (14-2) leapfrogged over Wilton after beating the Warriors 13-6 on May 11 at Dunning Field. The Rams also beat Ridgefield 15-5 on Tuesday.
The No. 2 seed in the FCIAC tournament, New Canaan defeated seventhseeded Fairfield Ludlowe 14-3 in Thursday’s quarterfinal round, and will face No. 3 seed Wilton in the semis at 6 p.m., Monday, in Greenwich.
Wilton (13-2) opened the FCIAC playoffs with a 17-3 victory over sixthseeded Staples in the quarterfinals.
Sacred Heart-Greenwich (14-1) defeated Taft 19-6 and Hotchkiss 10-7 and its only loss this season is a 9-8 defeat against Darien.
Sacred Heart will now play in the Prep Invitational in Brookline, Mass., facing host Dexter-Southfield on Saturday and Exeter Academy (NH) on Sunday
