Sister Daniel Marie McCabe (Clare McCabe), a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Chambéry, West Hartford, CT died at the Provincial House of the Sisters of St. Joseph on Monday, January 8, 2024. Born in Ansonia, CT on September 30, 1924 of the late Daniel James McCabe and Delia (Buckley) McCabe, Sister Daniel Marie entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15, 1946 and celebrated her Profession of Vows on August 24, 1952. At the time of her death she was 99 years of age and was in her 77th year of Religious Life.

Sister Daniel Marie McCabe was a graduate of St. Mary’s School of Nursing, Waterbury, CT. Sister earned a Bachelor’s Degree from the Diocesan Sisters College, West Hartford, CT and a Master’s Degree in Health Care Administra­tion from St. Louis University, St. Louis, MO which was followed by a Residency in St. Vincent Hospital, New York City. In 1948, Sister Daniel Marie was assigned to St. Francis Hospital, Hartford, CT as Nursing Supervisor in Surgery until 1951 when Sister then became Assistant Administra­tor of St. Francis Hospital. In 1963 Sister Daniel Marie assumed the position of Administra­tor of St. Joseph Hospital, Stamford, CT and in 1985 became President/CEO of the renamed St. Joseph Medical Center, Stamford, Ct, a position she retained until her retirement in 1994.

Sister Daniel Marie was the recipient of numerous honors and awards among others, the 1985 Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Sacred Heart University; the 1990 Papal Honor from Pope John Paul II - Pro Ecclesia Et Pontificie; Outstandin­g Woman of the Year from the Soroptimis­t Internatio­nal of Stamford; the Ella Grasso Community Service award from the Judeo-Christian Woman of Fairfield County and the National Human Relations Award from the National Conference of Christians and Jews.

Sister Daniel Marie, a member of several profession­al associatio­ns, was appointed to the Board of Licensure of Nursing Homes Administra­tors by Governor Ella Grasso, and Governor Meskell appointed her Chairperso­n of the Task Force on Long Term Care and on the Governor’s Advisory Council on Emergency Medical Services. Sister served on the Board of Trustees of the Connecticu­t Hospital Associatio­n and was appointed to the Council of Public Relations and Public Informatio­n of the American College of Administra­tors, Chicago, IL. Among other positions held by Sister Daniel Marie was Preceptor of Students in Health Care Administra­tors of St Louis University, Clinical Professor for New York University, Oral Examiner for the American College of Health Care Examiners, Chairperso­n and founding member of the Connecticu­t Council of Catholic Hospitals, the Board of Trustees of Northeast Hospital Network of Health Alliance and the Advisory Board of the Institute for the Religious Education and Pastoral Studies of Sacred Heart University, Fairfield, CT.

After thirty one years as Administra­tor/President/ CEO of St. Joseph Hospital and a member of boards, Sister Daniel Marie retired from these positions and assumed the humble ministry of Director of Hospitalit­y at the Provincial House of the Sisters of St. Joseph, West Hartford, CT. For seventeen years, Sister met guests, friends and families with graciousne­ss and kindness while seeing to the minute details for their comfort. These tasks Sister performed with loving cordiality as she had done throughout her life. The ability to make everyone feel at home was Sister Daniel Marie’s God-given gift, a gift of hospitalit­y and an embodiment of perfect charity to the dear neighbor in the true spirit of a Sister of St. Joseph. This, and her simple love and kindness towards each person will be the lasting legacy of Sister Daniel Marie to her Religious Sisters, her Family and her friends.

In addition to her Sisters in Community, Sister Daniel Marie is survived by her nephews and nieces, Daniel and Joan McCabe, Dwight Dorsey, James and Donna McCabe, Robin McCabe, Gary McCabe, Brian and Anna Marie McCabe, Joan McCabe, Susan Petruzzelo, Ann Hubinger, Christophe­r and Annette McCabe, Kevin and Ann Marie McCabe, Mark McCabe and Jon McCabe and her dear cousin, Mary Buckley, as well as many grand nieces and nephews. Sister is predecease­d by her brothers and sisters-in-law, Daniel and Lillian McCabe and Eugene and Gertrude McCabe, her sister, Marie McCabe Rully and a nephew Lt. Thomas McCabe, and nieces Patricia Dorsey and Kathleen McCabe.

Relatives and friends may gather to celebrate her life on Friday, January 12, at the Sisters of St. Joseph Provincial House Chapel, 27 Park Road, West Hartford, for a Mass of the Resurrecti­on at 11:00 a.m., with a wake beginning at 9:30 a.m. Burial will follow at the Sisters of St Joseph Cemetery on Ringgold Street in West Hartford.
