The latest report from data science company dunnhumby has revealed which grocery stores chains are among the top in the country for its annual grocery rankings.

The company’s seventh annual Retailer Preference Index (RPI) has revealed that Texas-based supermarket chain H-E-B is the No. 1 grocery store on its list due to its assortment, promotions and “superior digital capabilities.”

Chains found in Connecticut that made the list include Costco Wholesale (No. 3), Sam’s Club (No. 5), Aldi (No. 7), ShopRite (No. 8), Walmart (No. 10), Target (No. 12) and Trader Joe’s (No. 16).

The RPI is a statistical model from dunnhumby that looks at the financial results from 65 retailers who “sell everyday food and non-food household items.”

The financial data is sourced from Edge by Ascential while customer perception data comes from dunnhumby’s annual survey, which is sent out to approximately 10,000 shoppers, the data company reports.

The company looks at five areas to inform its rankings: price, promotions and rewards; quality; speed and convenience; digital capabilities and operations.

The data and annual survey also informs how each retailer is performing financially as well as how customers “emotionally connect” to these brands.

In the individual categories for chains with Connecticut locations, Aldi, Walmart and Save A Lot were among the top for price, promotions and rewards.

Trader Joe’s, The Fresh Market and Big Y were top for quality; Target, Walmart, Sam’s Club were the best for digital; Costco, Sam’s Club and BJ’s were among the best for operations; and Aldi, The Fresh Market and Save A Lot were among the top chains for speed and convenience.

Among its rankings, dunnhumby also found that a heightened competitive market and greater scrutiny by consumers will be among the prevalent shopping themes that will carry over from 2023 to 2024.

However, due to economic trends, the past year had the slowest growth rate since 2009 and one of the slowest growth rates in the past 30 years.

Wegman’s, which also scored high marks in the report, announced that construction would begin on its first location in Connecticut in the spring. The Norwalk grocery store is set to open in 2025.
