Checking in with Maggie Lawson

Maggie Lawson may not be a “Lethal Weapon” herself, but she’s lending support to one.

A familiar face from such series as “Psych,” “Angel From Hell” and “Back in the Game,” the actress signed up along with Seann William Scott for the current third season of Fox’s Tuesday series spinoff of the popular police-adventure movie franchise. Lawson recurs as emergency-room surgeon Natalie Flynn, ex-girlfriend of Wesley Cole (Scott), the new partner of Roger Murtaugh (DamonWayans Sr.) — and parent of a young daughter with Cole.

“It was a no-brainer,” the lively, friendly Lawson recalls of taking the part. “I sat down with Matt (series executive producer Miller) and Seann for this fantastic meeting, then I got to read the (first new) script and I was like, ‘Yes! I’min!’ I love how they’re writing this character and the stuff with Seann, who is so sweet. I just knew, ‘I want to work with these people. I want to be a part of this.’ ”

Though humorous projects have been her mainstay, Lawson appreciates the chance “LethalWeapon” gives her for drama: “Actually, I’d been looking for something like this. It’s been a while, and even though I did get opportunities to do some more-dramatic stuff on ‘Psych,’ it really has been comedy forme since that ended. That was also really exciting to me, so this has been wonderful on so many levels.”

Also the co-founder of the nonprofit Tiger Frances Foundation, which matches abused animals with caring youngsters, Lawson likes playing a mother again. She praises co-star Shay Rudolph, alias Natalie’s daughter Maya, as “just a dream. She’s so smart and so good, what a treat it is to work with her.”
