President Donald Trump has announced his first recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom and they include the wife of a major Republican donor, the longest-serving GOP senator in U.S. history, Elvis Presley, Babe Ruth and late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.

Medals are going to Miriam Adelson, a doctor and wife of Republican donor Sheldon Adelson; Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch; former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach and Alan Page, who began a legal career after leaving the NFL.

The medal is the nation’s highest honor for a civilian. It is one of the few presidential designations that dispenses with the traditional layers of staff review that precede pardons or commutations and instead reflects the commander in chief’s whims and personal interests.
