An unidentified man was undergoing surgery for life-threatening injuries suffered when he was shot in the abdomen by two masked gunmen early Thursday morning, police say.

The shooters fled and were still at large.

The incident happened at about 3:15 a.m. in the 8500 block of Whispering Creek Trail in south Fort Worth, police said.

The victim’s brother heard him arguing with two men outside his home, police spokesman Jimmy Pollozani said.

The victim had just arrived home, Capt. Todd Wadlington said. Then the brother heard gunshots.

“The (victim) stumbled inside of the residence and collapsed,” Wadlington said.

His brother saw the two men fleeing on foot, Pollozani said.

The victim was transported to a local hospital in critical condition and was undergoing surgery, Wadlington said.

He said there were no witnesses to the shooting and that it was unknown why the gunmen targeted the victim or whether the suspects stole any property.

A woman who said she has lived nearby for about 10 years said she was awakened by two gunshots.

She and another woman who lives nearby said their neighborhood is normally quiet and safe.

At about 11 a.m., a group of young men and women entered the house where the shooting happened. A woman who answered the door said they had no comment.
