FATAL FANNY
A 29-year-old British mom of three, Leah Cambridge, died on a Turkish operating table this summer while undergoing a Brazilian butt lift (BBL), a procedure where fat is harvested from the body and injected into the patient’s rear end. “One side effect that can prove fatal is a fat embolism,” explained Dr. Arash Akhavan, founder of the Dermatology and Laser Group in NYC. “Fat is [inadvertently] injected into buttock veins then carried to the lungs or heart, plugging up their vessels and cutting off their blood supply.” A safer alternative? “Em Sculpt,” says Dr. Akhavan. “It’s a noninvasive procedure that uses electromagnetic waves to cause 20,000 contractions of the butt muscles in 30 minutes. After four treatments, patients notice a significant lifting and toning of the buttock.”
