Selena Gomez: Shrinks Tells All!
Star has details from psychiatric experts on the singer’s breakdown.
HAS Selena Gomez been a Bad Liar about supposedly staying on the straight and narrow? The troubled pop star, who suffers from autoimmune disease lupus, voluntarily entered a mental facility in early October following what sources say is a mental breakdown. Selena’s spiral began months ago when ex Justin Bieber abruptly dumped her to reunite with Hailey Baldwin and pop the question. Just days after their engagement, Selena was allegedly spotted downing shots at an NYC hotel — a worrisome sight given her multiple rehab stints. “Doctors have all told her she needs to stop,” claimed a pal close to the singer, who had a kidney transplant last year. “Her family says she needs to stay sober, or she could die.” Instead, says the confidante, it became obvious to Selena’s mother, Mandy Teefey, that her daughter’s “refusal to live a sober life” would have dire consequences. Now Selena has checked into a rehab facility where she’s apparently receiving “dialectical behavior therapy” (DBT) to get control over her demons. “DBT is effective for people with borderline personality disorder or major emotional distress, especially with substance abuse issues,” explains psychotherapist Dr. Jenn Mann, author of The Relationship Fix: Dr. Jenn’s 6-Step Guide to Improving Communication, Connection and Intimacy. Star’s other expert surmises that Selena’s brave face is her worst enemy. “Though Selena is telling everyone — including herself — that it doesn’t bother her, [but] of course, it does,” says psychiatrist Dr. Carole Lieberman, M.D. “Not only is this causing her emotional breakdown, it’s causing her physical condition to flare up because the mind influences the body.” While neither doctor has treated Selena, Dr. Lieberman adds that DBT can only do so much: “It’s not likely to break through her denial about Justin, nor will it get to the deeper issues that caused this relationship to keep boomeranging and hurting her.”
