The host’s decision to extend her talk show contract, despite her actress wife wanting to move, is causing strife at home.
ELLEN DeGeneres was torn. With the contract for her popular daytime talk show set to end in 2020, the comedian had a huge decision to make: She could either pack it in after 16 years and focus on other things — like life at home with wife Portia de Rossi — or sign on the dotted line and commit to three more years as one of TV’s most in-demand hosts. When she announced she was staying on until 2022 in front of her live audience back in May, they cheered.
But not everyone was thrilled about the news. An insider reveals Portia has been reeling over Ellen’s curveball call, especially as the couple had been planning to leave the rat race behind and move to the Arrested Development actress’ native Australia to embrace a simpler life. “Ellen swore she was going to quit so they could relocate,” the source tells Star. “She told all their friends she was looking forward to retiring.” Portia, 46, was devastated when Ellen, 61, did a one-eighty, says the insider. "She sees it as a betrayal." Now, as reports surface that the couple has sold off two of their homes in quick suc-cession, pals are fearing the worst. "They're on shaky ground," says the source, "and some are saying their relationship may not last."
TORN APART Ellen and Portia's 11-year marriage has already seen its fair share of ups and downs. But things are more tense than ever at home. “They’ve been fighting nonstop,” says the insider, adding that Ellen’s attempts to appease Portia have fallen flat. “Portia is so upset, she’ll leave the house for hours at a time with no word about where she’s going,” says the source. According to pals, they’ve even resorted to sleeping in separate bedrooms. “They’re not getting along at all,” says the insider.
They’ve wanted different things for a while. While Ellen embraces the Hollywood lifestyle and thrives on the attention she gets from A-list pals like Jennifer Aniston, Portia — who announced she was retiring from acting in May 2018 — detests the spotlight. “When you have paparazzi hiding in the bushes outside your home, the only thing you can control is how you respond publicly,” she’s said. And while she’s tried her best to put her own needs behind Ellen’s, she’s reached her limit. “Portia tried to make a happy home with Ellen in L.A.,” says the insider. “She cooks for Ellen, fetches her tea or wine after a hard day, and listens to her gripe.
