They were Hollywood A-listers at the top of their game, only to fade from the spotlight. Learn about the shocking secret lives of long-lost stars.

SHANIA TWAIN

In the late ’90s, Shania Twain was one of the biggest music stars in the country. But around 2000, feeling ready for a break, she retreated to Switzerland with then-husband Mutt Lange and had a son, Eja. All stayed quiet on the professional front — she didn’t record an album for 15 years. But her personal life made headlines when Mutt’s affair with Shania’s best friend was exposed and, in a twist worthy of a country song, Shania found love with the pal’s ex-husband, Frédéric Thiébaud. The singer, 54, was back on top with a world tour in 2018, and recently announced her new Las Vegas residency, which kicks off Dec. 6.

KELLY MCGILLIS

She was an in-demand leading lady, thanks to memorable turns in Top Gun (she played Tom Cruise’s love interest) and Witness with Harrison Ford. But the 62-year-old left showbiz shortly after to get sober and go “on a journey to figure out who the hell” she was, she says. Now the mom of two, who publicly came out as a lesbian in 2009, teaches acting classes in North Carolina. As for a guest stint in Top Gun 2? “Oh my god, no,” she recently said. “I’m old and fat!”

TONY DANZA

In 2009, the Who’s the Boss actor took a hiatus from acting to teach 10th-grade English in Philadelphia. The 68-yearold star says getting in front of a chalkboard had been a lifelong dream. “The impetus and the desire to go do it was because I could smell 60,” he says, “[and I thought] I better do this before I can’t do it anymore.” The stint lasted just a year (one semester of which was filmed for the A&E series Teach: Tony Danza), but the star — whose 2018 Netflix series The Good Cop was canceled after its first season — says he still hosts the school’s annual talent show!

TIM ALLEN

He’s doing great now, but that wasn’t always the case for the Home Improvement actor. In 1978, long before that show’s 1991 launch, the actor was arrested at a Michigan airport for possession of cocaine, and subsequently pleaded guilty to drug trafficking charges. He spent just over two years at a federal prison in Minnesota before being paroled in 1981. “It put me in a position of great humility, and I was able to make amends to friends and family and refocus my life,” says Tim, 66, who went on to great success in both television and movies, including the recordbreaking Toy Story series.

Twenty years ago, she was busy racking up awards and nominations for her work on Mad About You and opposite Jack Nicholson in As Good as It Gets. These days, the 56-year-old single mom is most likely to be found surfing the waves in Malibu and focusing on raising her teenage daughter. Following a public appearance earlier this year, the actress was rumored to have gotten plastic surgery on her face. “She doesn’t look like herself,” whispers an insider. But vanity is no longer important to her, Helen says. “I gave up worrying about it.”

NEVE CAMPBELL

“I needed a minute,” says the actress of ditching the spotlight and moving to London after a string of big- and small-screen hits, including TV’s Party of Five and ’90s flicks like The Craft, Scream and Wild Things. The 45-yearold mom of two admits that being pigeonholed as a horror movie star caused resentment — but she’s since adopted a more grateful attitude and moved on to less-scary roles in House of Cards and the Canadian film Castle in the Ground. She doesn’t think she’ll show up on the upcoming PO5 reboot, but says, “I look forward to seeing it!”

KIEFER SUTHERLAND

The longtime actor was still starring as beloved Jack Bauer on Fox’s wildly popular series 24 in 2007, when he was ordered to serve

48 days in jail for a DUI conviction and violating probation. “I have gone to jail a few times in my life for doing some incredibly stupid stuff,” says the 52-year-old, “and I can tell you, the first thing you lose when you walk through those doors is your dignity.” In recent years, the cleaned-up star —who went on to play the lead in Designated Survivor for three seasons — has been focused on his music career.

RYAN GOSLING

As a child star, he performed alongside the likes of Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears on The Mickey Mouse Club, then parlayed that into a rock-solid film career. But the 38-year-old father of two has always kept his distance from the trappings of Hollywood. In 2007, he lived in the Skid Row area of L.A., saying, “You can’t filter yourself from reality there.” And in 2013, he took a mini break from acting to get “perspective.”

BRETT BUTLER

It was an epic fall from, well, grace for the Grace Under Fire star. After a successful five-year run on the ABC sitcom, the comedian spiraled out of control due to a serious drug addiction, which ultimately left her homeless. “I did everything but crack and needles,” she reveals. “I did it till the wheels came off.” Her rock bottom was ending up in a homeless shelter. Brett, 61, has since gotten to a much better place — she starred in two episodes of The Leftovers in 2015 and also appeared in How to Get Away With Murder in 2016.
