Q & A with CAROLINE AARON

-

SHE’S the other Mrs. Maisel. Caroline Aaron, the largerthan-life mother-in-law of rising comedian Midge on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, chats with Star about season 3.

Where does season 3 find Shirley and the rest of the Maisels?

The Maisels are moving up in the world, so change is coming their way too. Son Joel [Michael Zegen] is striking out on his own: He’s no longer working for his dad and he’s committed to rebooting his life after his marriage blows up. With Midge [Rachel Brosnahan] on the road, he’s a single father, so dad Moishe [Kevin Pollak] and Shirley step up and take care of the grandchildren whenever we can.

How does Shirley feel about Midge leaving to pursue her career?

She can’t quite wrap her mind around it, but she takes her cues from Joel. As long as he’s OK with it, she’s OK with it. In some ways, Shirley is evolved for a woman of the ’50s. She and Moishe are equal partners.

What are some things about the series that would surprise fans?

The Weissmans’ apartment is on a sound stage in Brooklyn! I have friends who live in the actual building that the Weissmans ’fictional home is based on. Also, our amazing clothes are handmade, but 100 percent authentic to the times.

How are you like your character — and how are you different?

Shirley and I are both Jewish, happily married and the mother of a son. But Shirley is content, thrilled with her life. The idea of being content is antithetical to me. I’m aspirational, trying to push the boundaries, living outside of my comfort zone.

What else do you have coming up?

I’m going to guest-star on a sitcom playing Jason Biggs’ mother. I’m also looking forward to doing a workshop for Such a Pretty Face, a play I wrote for my daughter, Sydney.
