Times were tough after the talk show host’s parents divorced when she was just 6 and she and her two siblings were split up. Left with her single mom in Texas, the 40-year-old has recalled, “We lived paycheck to paycheck.… I always used to hate it when people would be like, ‘Money doesn’t buy everything,’ when you are little and poor. Rich people say that, not poor people. I don’t know one poor person that’s going, ‘Money doesn’t buy happiness.’ It pays you to get out of eviction notices.”
