CONSTANCE WU HAS HER SAY
Back in 2019, Constance Wu faced the wrath of the internet when she tweeted her dismay that ABC had renewed the groundbreaking sitcom Fresh Off the Boat for a sixth season. “I didn’t care how I sounded,” the 40-yearold writes in her new memoir, Making a Scene. “I just needed to finally make a sound.” At the time, the Hustlers actress explained that she’d been looking forward to other projects rather than a grueling TV schedule. The blowback was immediate — and devastating. A friend, she writes, found her “clutching the balcony railing of my fifth-floor apartment and staring wildly down at the NYC street below” and took her to a hospital. Only now is the Crazy Rich Asians star finally revealing that her tweets were actually a reaction to the sexual harassment she faced on set from a highlevel producer who took over her life. Explaining why she didn’t come forward earlier, she’s pointed to the show’s cultural significance. “I didn’t want to sully such a great beacon of hope for Asian Americans in the television landscape. I didn’t want to stain that.” ★
