Season 5 of The Crown hasn’t even aired yet but it’s already drawing major criticism. Former prime minister Sir John Major recently called a plotline about then–Prince Charles demanding that his mother be dethroned a “barrel load of malicious nonsense” and now Oscar-winning British actress
Dame Judi Dench is also sounding off, accusing the hit Netflix series of favoring “crude sensationalism” over historical accuracy.
The much-decorated Belfast star is calling for the streamer to include a disclaimer at the beginning of each episode saying the show is a work of fiction. “No one is a greater believer in artistic freedom than I, but this cannot go unchallenged,” she complained, noting a scene in which Charles (Dominic West) suggests his mother deserved jail time for her “deficient” parenting. “[It’s] cruelly unjust to the individuals and damaging to the institution they represent.”
The Crown season 5 debuts on Netflix Nov. 9.
