SA’s Faver, Hamilton have knack of getting into opposing backfields

Kyle Faver and Torin Hamilton are pretty smart football players.

When it comes to playing defensive end for the Starkville Academy Volunteers, Faver and Hamilton know if they listen to defensive line coach Bubba Davis, they are going to have success.

Davis, a veteran head coach with a state championship tradition at West Point and other places, has been instructing Faver and Hamilton how to beat their blocks and get into an opponent’s backfield. They are seeing good results. Faver leads the Volunteers with 12 tackles for loss, while Hamilton adds 11 tackles for loss.

“I just do what coach Davis has taught me,” Faver said. “Speed is what he said is my strong suit. Torin is a little bit bigger than me and he’s faster than me too, but what coach Davis has been preaching is use our speed to get around the offensive tackles. Off that, we’ll keep them guessing. It’s really worked out for both of us all year.”

Starkville Academy head coach Chase Nicholson said Faver and Hamilton are athletic and strong.

He’s not surprised that they have a knack of getting tackles for loss.

“They are both good football players,” Nicholson said. “A lot (of their production) is what the offense does that they can counter, but a lot of it is two really good athletes and they enjoy contact.”

Four of Hamilton’s tackles for loss have come on sacks, while Faver has two sacks.

Linebacker Drew Jackson continues to lead the Vols in tackles with 73 and Faver said the linebackers had a good night in a 28-9 win over French Camp.

“They were flying around,” Faver said. “Everything was fitting right. Coach (Brad) Butler came in and we really had a good plan going into the game. It just really worked out.”
