Situation looking up for Greenville with three wins
Adjusting to consolidation and Class 6A football in Greenville hasn’t been as smooth as some in the Delta would like it to be.
The Hornets are coming off of a winless 2015 and spirits were likely low among those that supported an often-talented group of players. This season things are moving in the right direction for those proud folks as Greenville has already won three games and put up a fight against top-five Warren Central last week.
With Greenville being
thought of at the bottom of the tough Region 2, that’s what puts the entire district in perspective.
Starkville head coach Ricky Woods said that there can never be a team overlooked when region play begins and this week is no different when the Hornets come to Starkville.
“We’re in a really, really hard region,” Woods said. “Everyone has great players so if you don’t perform well, you’re going to get
beat. It’s a hard game any way you look at it. They’re very athletic and these guys can run. If you were in a track meet with them, they’d win every relay. We can’t let them get loose.”
Junior quarterback Tayvon Littlejohn is yet another dual-threat quarterback that the Yellowjackets have to deal with this week. After the work that Northwest Rankin put in with quarterback Braden Jones last week, that’s been a point of emphasis this week for SHS.
Littlejohn has already rushed for 480 yards and five touchdowns averaging 8.7 yards per rush. Additionally, he’s thrown for 18 touchdowns
and 1,869 passing yards completing 63 percent of his passes.
Senior defensive end Nelson Jordan saw Jones’ big game last week and now knows just how quickly things can go wrong for his team despite the talent they possess. The focus of the week has been spent on refocusing as a team and the Yellowjackets are preparing for a talented bunch.
“We’re focused on Greenville because we need to come back from the loss last week,” Jordan said. “We’ve got to take things week by week and finish the season off. All of the
teams in our district are good. We’ve got to come with it every week because we’re getting everyone’s top game.”
Littlejohn’s top target will be Zion Washington, who is putting up solid numbers in the first half of the season with 32 catches, 683 yards and nine touchdowns to this point.
Senior linebacker Jalyan Woods leads the team with 37 tackles this year.
Greenville’s losses this season came to the hands of Clarksdale, South Panola, Southaven and Warren Central. The Hornets were victorious over Gentry, Greenwood and Murrah.
