International Fiesta to spice up MSU campus in April
Those looking to experience cultures from around the world will soon have the opportunity to do so in Starkville’s back yard.
The 27th annual International Fiesta will take place on the Mississippi State University campus Saturday, April 1, and feature sights, sounds and tastes from across the globe.
Performances and displays from people around the world will be featured on the Drill Field for all to see. The fiesta will begin with the Parade of Flags, and a variety of festivities will follow.
The Fiesta is a family event, and people and children of all ages are invited to experience traditions from around the world. There will be performances, cuisine, and the opportunity to experience different cultures without leaving Mississippi. Joan Mylroie, president of the World Neighbors Association, said it feels like taking a trip around the world without ever buying a plane ticket.
“Everyone is welcome to take part in the Parade of Flags,” Mylroie said. “Please come to Allen Hall at 10:45 a.m. and carry a flag across the MSU Drill Field.”
Student associations and groups will have booths set up and many will be sporting traditional outfits and serving the flavors of their countries. Attendees and participants can ask questions about displays and the countries that they represent.
“To me, it’s an opportunity for people to get to know each other,” Mylroie said. “I think that’s so important in our current world situation. Our first step to world peace is to get to know each other and talk to each other, and become friends.”
Groups participating in the cross-cultural event range from European-based groups, to Asian, African, Middle Eastern, and some American groups, as well.
