Indians blank White Sox 3-0

-

CHICAGO — Corey Kluber has been too good for too long for the Indians to panic over a few rough starts.

Cleveland’s ace returned to form Friday night, a welcome — if unsurprising — sight for the reigning AL champions.

Kluber pitched a three-hitter and faced two over the minimum, leading the Indians over the Chicago White Sox 3-0.

Kluber (2-1) faced 29 batters in his fourth complete-game shutout and first since June 21, 2016 against Tampa Bay. Only one Chicago runner reached second base, and Kluber struck out nine, walked two and threw 110 pitches.

Kluber entered with a 6.38 ERA over three starts this season, hampered mostly by allowing five homers in 18 1/3 innings.

Rangers 5, Royals 2

ARLINGTON, Texas — Yu Darvish pitched eight innings in his longest outing since elbow surgery two years ago and the Rangers scored the tying and go-ahead runs without a hit, completing a four-game sweep.

The Japanese right-hander retired 15 of 16 batters after giving up three consecutive hits in the third. Two of those were back-to-back drives from Mike Moustakas and Jorge Bonifacio, whose first big league homer came two innings after he singled for his first career hit.

Darvish (2-2) struck out eight as the Rangers finished their second four-game sweep of Kansas City in as many seasons. The Royals have lost five of six since a four-game winning streak.

Tigers 13, Twins 4

MINNEAPOLIS — The Detroit Tigers have devised quite a system for getting production out of their emergency call-ups: get them to the ballpark as late as possible before throwing them into the lineup.

John Hicks had three hits, including his first career homer, and drove in five runs to lead Michael Fulmer and the Detroit Tigers to a victory over the Minnesota Twins.

One day after the benches cleared when Tigers starter Matthew Boyd threw behind slugger Miguel Sano in retaliation for teammate JaCoby Jones being hit in the face, there was no sign of lingering hard feelings.

Blue Jays 6, Angels 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Marcus Stroman pitched a sevenhitter for Toronto, and Devon Travis hit a go-ahead, two-run homer during a four-run eighth inning.

Stroman (2-2) survived a rocky ninth by inducing a gameending double play in his third career complete game — and his second in 12 days.

Mariners 11, Athletics 1

OAKLAND, Calif. — Nelson Cruz homered and drove in five runs for Seattle, and Taylor Motter hit his first career grand slam.

Yovani Gallardo (1-2) pitched into the seventh for his first win with the Mariners, who ended a three-game losing streak and won for only the second time in 11 road games.

Oakland had won five in a row.

Astros 6, Rays 4, 10 innings

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Brian McCann and Yuli Gurriel both had RBI singles in the 10th inning, and the Houston Astros rallied from an early four-run deficit to beat the Tampa Bay Rays.
