Booneville- Frances Collier Abernethy, 96, passed away Thursday, June 8, 2017, at the Hospice Ministries, Inc. in Ridgeland, MS. She was born in the Self Creek Community of Oktibbeha Co., Ms., on May 4, 1921 to Benjamin Phillip Collier and Jennie Ruby Butler Collier. After graduating from Starkville High School, she married James W. “Whit” Abernethy, Sr., and they were married for 57 years, until he died on August 24, 1997.

Mrs. Abernethy was a house wife to her husband and mother of her two sons. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Booneville, and its Library Sunday School class, the Bible study group, Women`s Club, and Junior Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing bridge, traveling and reading, and she also enjoyed visiting with family at the beach. Mrs. Abernethy was a rabid Mississipp­i State University Athletics fan. She also was a member of the Natchez Trace Chapter of the Daughters of American Revolution.

A Graveside Service will be at 3:00 o’clock on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at Woodland Cemetery, County Road 419 in Chickasaw County, MS., with Dr. Lynn Jones, officiatin­g.

Houston Funeral Home will be in charge of the arrangemen­ts.

Survivors include her two sons, James W. “Jim” (Judy) Abernethy, Jr. of Oxford, MS., and Phillip B. Abernethy of Madison, MS., one granddaugh­ter, Taylor, one grandson, John (Haley), one great-grandson, John Reid, a sister, Dorothy (Collier) McReynolds, a brother, Joe Tom Collier, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and six brothers; Washington B. Collier, John B. Collier, Dennis P. Collier, Hunter Benjamin Collier, Sam Deen Collier and James Collier.
