EMCC program director honored by national publication
An East Mississippi Community College employee has been recognized by one of the leading publications in her field.
Sha’ Carla Petty, who serves as program director for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) at EMCC was named one of Workforce Magazine’s 2017 Game Changers. Game Changers are named by Workforce annually, and include 25 professionals making a difference in the human resources world both in the U.S. and overseas. Petty was nominated as a Game Changer by EMCC Youth Program Coordinator Yulanda Haddix.
“I always remain humble for recognition when it’s given, but it feels good,” Petty said.
Petty, 35, has worked at EMCC for more than eight years, and oversees educational programs to help people receiving SNAP benefits gain economic strength through education. The program requires students to complete a career readiness, or Work Keys certification focusing on three areas: applied mathematics, locating information and reading. Participants are also taught employee building skills, including work ethic, communication, teamwork and organization. Participants must be referred by the department of human services.
“It’s an opportunity for them to come in to obtain the skills they need to get a job,” Petty said.
Petty is also in the process of arranging transportation to and from work for those in the program, which she said was one of the more common barriers. She is currently working with entities in Columbus and Noxubee County to arrange for low-cost transportation options for participants. She said she hopes to have transportation in place sometime this month.
