Students, parents hopeful on move-in day at MSU
Scores of new students and parents descended on the Mississippi State University campus on Saturday for move-in day for the fall semester.
Humphrey Coliseum played host to students registering for their oncampus housing and lines could be seen stretching around the venue as parents and students alike waiting anxiously to start the new school year.
George Poteet of Holly Springs stood with his 18-year-old son Grant as they patiently waited for registration officials to work through the process of getting him set up with his new dorm. This is the third time the Poteet family has gotten a student ready to live on campus at MSU and he said each time has worked out well.
“We are just waiting out a little technical problem right now, but there’s a lot of people coming through so you expect some glitches every now and then,” George Poteet said.
Grant Poteet was ready to move in, but said the whole process was new and “nerve wracking.”
“It’s exciting … it’s a lot of work but it’s exciting,” Grant Poteet said.
Two rounds of check-in were held on Saturday, with the first round seeing doors open at 8:30 a.m. and the second round beginning at 12:30 p.m.
Once the students checked in, they were greeted at their residence hall by move-in volunteers, which included faculty, staff, spirit group members, athletic team members, members of various student organizations, Starkville residents, and MSU leadership to assist in their move.
Petal native Cody Oliver, 18, stood in line with his mother Sheila to do the paperwork to move in to Critz Hall.
“I’m ready to get it over with,” he said. “I’m nervous for school to start but ready to get moved in and start the semester.”
Sheila Oliver said she will have an empty nest now that all of her children have left home for college.
“I’m nervous and I’ve cried,” Sheila Oliver said. “My daughter has already gone through this so I’m an empty nester now after he leaves but I’m excited for him.”
She said despite her son leaving home, she wants him to enjoy the experience and succeed at MSU.
“We have family that lives here in Starkville, so he’ll have somebody to take care of him if he needs something so we’re really excited.”
