Pair of Bulldogs go over 30-point mark

It has been 25 years since the Mississippi State Bulldogs witnessed the type of offensive performance from two different players that happened Wednesday night in Humphrey Coliseum.

When Teaira McCowan and Victoria Vivians both reached the 30-point mark against Oregon, it was the first time that two Bulldogs accomplished that feat since December 31, 1992 against TCU.

The duo combined for 65 points in the 90-79 victory over the Ducks.

McCowan had a career-high 35 points on 15-of-18 shooting, while Vivians scored 26 of her 30 points in the second half.

MSU women’s coach Vic Schaefer has never had two players put up points in that way in a game before and plans to reward the team.

“Not that I can remember,” Schaefer said. “I’m going to give them a day off (today) because of that.”

McCowan had a double-double at halftime of 21 points and 10 rebounds as the Bulldogs jumped out to a 45-33 lead.

The Ducks had no answer for MSU’s junior from Brenham, Texas.

“When she puts her mind to it, there’s not a whole lot you can do,” Oregon coach Kelly Graves said. “I didn’t think she’d get 35 and 19, but I knew we’d have a difficult night against her. She’s good and she was motivated (Wednesday night) for whatever reason.”

McCowan also had 19 rebounds and five blocked shots for the Bulldogs against the Ducks.

She became the first major conference player with at least 35 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks in a game since Brittany Griner did it on January 30, 2013.
