Stovall looks to be more of a leader for Bulldogs

Hunter Stovall can play one of three infield positions for the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

No matter where he ends up, there is one thing Stovall wants to make sure he’s doing for the Bulldogs this season.

“This year I’ve got to pick it up and be more of a leader no matter if I’m at second, third or short,” Stovall said. “I’ve got to take up my role.”

With the departure of Ryan Gridley, Stovall may see more playing time at shortstop and may even get the start there when MSU opens the season Friday at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Stovall didn’t get much experience playing the infield in high school, as he was the regular catcher, but he has grown to be comfortable away from out behind the plate in college.

Whether he’s at second base or shortstop this season with the Bulldogs doesn’t make any difference to Stovall.

“It’s not that different,” Stovall said “The way I look at it is a ground ball is a ground ball. You catch it and throw it to first. No matter where I’m at, that’s what I’m going to do.

“The plays you make in practice are the plays you make in the game. You are not going to make them unless you make them.”

MSU pitcher Konnor Pilkington will have confidence just knowing that Stovall is on the infield somewhere behind him this season.

The defense that Stovall provides does not go unnoticed by Pilkington and the other hurlers on the staff.

“He’s always been athletic and always flying around the field like a wild man,” Pilkington said. “His fielding has always been crisp. He’s always getting extra work in. He always does really well with his footwork. With him out in the field, his range is unbelievable.”

As much as Stovall values his defensive role on the squad, he wants to step up his game offensively.

Stovall had a batting average of .288 with two home runs, six doubles and 18 runs batted in last season.

He concentrated in the fall on his hitting and believes he will improve those numbers.

“I’m getting in a groove,” Stovall said “I’m comfortable. I’m seeing pitches very well and I’m confident.”
