Nothing Stays the Same

-

Have you ever wished you could just freeze time, keeping everything the same?

When I go back to my childhood home, my mother is no longer there to greet me as I drive up or to wave good-bye when I leave. Our world, as we know it, is constantly changing. The stock market's condition can change overnight, affecting the future of many who depend on investments and retirement accounts. Hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and fires can change not only landscapes, but lives. We don't like change.

In an online article on change, Carol Kinsey Goman made an interesting statement. “Recent advances in brain analysis technology allow researchers to track the energy of a thought moving through the brain in much the same way as they track blood flowing through the body. And, as scientists watch different areas of the brain light up in response to specific thoughts, it becomes clear that we all react pretty much the same way to change. We try to avoid it…The way we've always done it is mentally comfortable. It not only feels right, it feels good.”

We may not like change, but we need not become depressed when it comes. After all, it too will pass. Paul encourages us in 2 Corinthians 4:18 “to fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” God said in Malachi 3:6, “…I am the Lord, I do not change…”

The psalmist spoke this to God: “In the beginning, You laid the foundations of the earth and made the heavens with Your hands. They will perish, but You will remain forever; they will wear out like old clothing. You will change them like a garment and discard them. But You are always the same; You will live forever” (Psalm 102:25-27).

God doesn't change. His Word never changes – it changes us! All He has said – all His promises - remain true today. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life” (John 3:16). Then He promises, “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5). He is the same yesterday, today, and forever!

In a changing world we can trust our unchanging God!
