Cannizaro out as State head coach

Multiple media reports have confirmed that Andy Cannizaro is expected to be relieved of his duties as head baseball at Mississippi State.

The dismissal is expected to happen as soon as this morning. 247Sports.com was the first to report the news.

According to 247Sports, Cannizaro is being let go “with cause though University officials have yet to state on record what said cause is.” Neither Cannizaro or multiple MSU officials, including athletic director John Cohen, immediately responded to requests for comment from the Starkville Daily News on Monday night.

MSU pitching coach Gary Henderson, who served as Kentucky's head coach from 2009 through 2016, is expected to take over for the Bulldogs for the remainder of this season.

Cannizaro has spent just one season and three games of another with the Bulldogs. Cannizaro was hired after Cohen left his seat as head baseball coach to become MSU's athletic director. Cannizaro put together a magical debut season with State, guiding MSU to the Super Regionals last year despite a plethora of injuries to the pitching staff. State started off on a sour note this season though by getting swept at Southern Miss this past weekend. Those three losses to the Golden Eagles will now apparently be the final three games of Cannizaro's tenure.

MSU has little time to let the news of Cannizaro's dismissal sink in. The Bulldogs are scheduled to face Jackson State on the road on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
