HOUSTON, TX. – Sophomore Athena Yang opened up the day red hot and didn't look back as her top-six finish led the Mississippi State women's golf team to an 11-over 299 in a rain-shortened Dickson Invitational presented by Ion.
Yang carded a pair of birdies to finish the event, which was shortened by rain to just one 18-hole round, tied for sixth with a 1-under 71.
Her round, which finished one stroke off her season low, helped MSU end the event tied with No. 23 Iowa State for ninth at 11-over 299.
“Mother Nature was not very good to us this week,” MSU coach Ginger Brown-Lemm said. “We were able to get out there and get 18 in (Tuesday), walking the course in a flood. We had good rounds from Athena, Katie, and Blair which anchored our team round. We are continuing to work hard and learn from each round.”
Nearly 6 inches of rain fell over the weekend causing officials of The Dickson to cancel Monday's opening two rounds.
Yang opened her day on the rain-saturated course with three pars before sinking a birdie
on No. 5. She finished her round with another birdie on her final hole.
In her spring debut, junior Katie Holt fired a trio of birdies to wrap up the tournament at 1-over 73 and tied for 21st. Reigning Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week Blair Stockett found the going tough on her first nine holes, but the rookie made a strong rally on the back nine, carding birdies on Nos. 11, 15 and 17 to wrap the day with a 3-over 75.
Ela Grimwood and Aubree Jones rounded out the Bulldog lineup with an 80 and 82, respectively.
Brown-Lemm's squad gets only a few days of rest before returning to action March 2-4 at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, S.C.
