Choctaw County ready for stretch

Starkville Daily News - - SCORECARD - By DANNY P. SMITH sports@starkvilledai

It wasn’t the amount of baseball the Choctaw County Chargers wanted to have over the weekend, but that’s all about to change.

After only playing three innings on Friday in a shortened 8-0 victory over Aberdeen at home, Choctaw County’s Saturday game against Noxapater was canceled due to the forecast of heavy rain.

This will be a busy week for the Chargers as they host Nettleton tonight in a Class 3A, Region 4 matchup that could have postseason implications, then the playoffs start on Thursday.

“We definitely have to beat (Nettleton tonight) to have second place in district,” Choctaw County coach Andy Young said.

With the victory over Aberdeen, the Chargers improved their records to 15-5 overall and 7-2 in the district.

Young credits a strong 11-man senior class as a reason why Choctaw County is enjoying a successful season.

“It’s probably the best group from top to bottom that I’ve ever had and it’s been a great group,” Young said. “I started eight seniors (against Aberdeen) and my catcher was the only underclassmen in a normal lineup. I’m definitely going to miss that group. We’re lucky we’re having a great year.

“I hope we can keep on playing five or six weeks.”
