Chargers beat Eagles, celebrate senior night

ACKERMAN – It was senior night in Ackerman as Choctaw County honored three boys and three girls basketball players for their outstandin­g careers and they all played their final games at Ty Cobb Gymnasium

Both games against the rival Eupora Eagles ended with good vibes for the two teams, but they weren’t without their teaching moments.

For the boys squad, Choctaw County led wire to wire as it knocked off the Eagles 67-55, but its coach felt it could have been a much cleaner game. He’s coaching for bigger things like postseason play as his team is continuing to learn.

“Senior night is a little different,” Chargers boys coach Gary Beals said. “We had different people here and we wanted to play outside of the realm of what the team concept is. I feel pretty good about our team, though. We’ve got to protect the ball and get better at knowing what a good shot is at certain situations.”

It’s been a constant build for Choctaw County (7-15) to be playing its best basketball of the season and the Chargers have worked through some major losses from a year ago as well as some freak injuries to win four out of the last five games this season after starting the year 2-10.

Rakeim Ashford, Logan Murphy and Taiwan Cook were honored for their careers at Choctaw County on senior night, but a sophomore stole the spotlight. Zavier Coleman lit up the Ty Cobb Gymnasium with a night to remember from deep as he dropped 21 points and was 7-of-10 from 3-point range.
