No injuries or spills in tanker wreck

A Monday morning 18-wheeler wreck at a busy interchange in Starkville could have been much worse after the tanker truck rolled down a steep hill.

Starkville Fire Department Battalion Chief David Gaudin said the truck went off the bypass as it was coming off of Highway 82 onto Highway 25 South at the ramp.

The driver walked away from the wreck unharmed, he said.

“Nothing spilled out, everything is contained,” Gaudin said. “The diesel wasn't even leaking. We're lucky. It's all contained and nobody was hurt.”

Crews could be seen on the side of the steep embankment shortly after noon on Monday and the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol directed traffic around the ramp leading up to the scene.

The truck was carrying a powdery martial used to make PVC pipes, but Gaudin said it was not hazardous and did not pose an immediate threat, especially considering there was no spill.

Starkville Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Brandon Lovelady said the initial call of the wreck was received at about 10:13 a.m. with the vehicle reportedly overturned in the curve.

He said the truck could not be moved until the contents were emptied, but said a pump truck was expected to arrive for the task sometime Monday afternoon.

SPD is handling the investigation of the wreck.
