SHS teams claim 6A, Region 3 Tournament openers

MADISON – It was a game that came down to the wire, but the Starkville Lady Yellow Jackets were able to win their first round game in the Class 6A, Region 3 Tournament against the host Madison Central Lady Jaguars on Tuesday 40-36.

Starkville improved its record to 19-3 and will play in the regional championsh­ip game Friday night at 7 p.m. against Northwest Rankin.

The Lady Jackets jumped out to a 10-4 lead after the first quarter and expanded the margin to 19-11 by halftime.

In the third quarter, Madison Central outscored SHS 14-8 to get to within 27-25. The Lady Jackets held on down the stretch to take the victory.

Jalisa Outlaw scored 20 points to pace the scoring attack for SHS.

Boys Game

The Jackets handled the Cougars and had no problem getting their 25th win of the season.

After taking a 19-10 advantage after the first 8 minutes of play, Starkville outscored Northwest Rankin 14-9 in the second quarter for a 33-19 halftime lead and coasted from there.

Coltie Young had 14 points for the Jackets, while Eric Green and Atavius Jones added 10 points each.

Starkville (25-1) will play in the Class 6A, Region 3 championsh­ip game Friday at 8:30 p.m. against Murrah.
