“Faulkner's Portrayal of Young People” at Starkville Public Library
Dr. Nancy D. Hargrove will present a talk on William Faulkner's Portrayal of Young People at 4 p.m. on March 26 at the Starkville Public Library.
This will include characters from the novels “The Sound and the Fury” and “Absalom, Absalom!” as well as from the short novel and short story “The Bear”
“Barn Burning.”
Hargrove says, “Faulkner presents sensitive and compassionate portraits of young Southerners, both male and female, as they face various difficulties in their world. His understanding and of the problems of growing up in circumstances that are often less than ideal is both complex and profound.”
No special preparation is necessary to attend the lecture, although comments and questions from those who have read any of these works are welcome during the question and answer period that will follow. The talk is free and open to all.
Hargrove is William L. Giles Distinguished Professor Emerita of English. She has published books on T.S. Eliot and Sylvia Plath as well as essays on a variety of authors, including Southern writers such as Faulkner and Welty. She has won numerous awards for teaching and research, including five Fulbright Awards to various European countries, the Mississippi Professor of the Year Award, and a John Grisham Master Teacher Award.
Her talk is sponsored by the Starkville Public Library. Ginny Holtcamp, Director of the Library, says, “We are so pleased that Dr. Hargrove is going to give this talk for members of the community. She has led the very popular discussion series of great pieces of literature for many years, and we encourage everyone to attend what will be an outstanding exploration of Faulkner's young characters.”
