Faith Builds on Faith

- GWEN YARBER FAITH COLUMNIST

Faith builds on faith. Just as muscles are developed through exercise, so is faith. David said in 1 Chronicles 16:12,

“Remember

His marvelous works which He has done…”

Our daughter decided to attend a foreign university during her junior year in college. She got on a plane alone, traveled to a place she had never been without knowing anyone there, to stay for a year. We missed her very much, but it proved to be one of the most exciting times in my relationship with the Lord. He proved faithful – not only in keeping her safe and providing her with friends, but He revealed His care for us even in small ways. One night about 8:30 I had such a longing to talk to her, but there was no “phone box” on her dorm floor. It was downstairs in the lobby. I also knew it was 2:30 in the morning there! Within two minutes, the phone rang and she was on the line! She had waked up and could not go back to sleep, so she decided to call home! Only God could have done that! I had not asked Him to have her call, but He gave me the “desire of my heart” (Psalm 37:4)!

During spring break, she and friends backpacked across Europe. She sent us a picture of her sitting on a large boulder, surrounded by water. My mother's heart cried for her vulnerability, and my mind started filling with all sorts of thoughts. But the Lord, in His grace, caused me to remember 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 which I had been studying. “Bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.” In other words, don't allow yourself to think thoughts contrary to what God has said and promised in His Word.

Philippians 2:5 tells me to have the mind of Christ. Chapter 4:6-7 says, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” So instead of letting my mind go off in all directions thinking “What if…” I am to think on “things that are true, noble, pure, lovely, of good report…” (4:8). If I meditate (think deeply) on these “things which I have learned and received and heard…the God of peace will be with me.”

That's a promise!
