Earning the 2019-2020 Military Friendly® Schools Designation, Mississippi University for Women announced The W Free Tuition Program today [Tuesday, May 7], furthering its support of service members.

The cooperative agreement between The W and the Mississippi National Guard will ensure free tuition to participants enrolled full time at the university. The opportunity also extends to full- time Army members.

The memorandum of understanding states the National Guard “seeks opportunities to improve our men and women's ability to solve complex problems at home and abroad. Higher education is a critical piece of that formula. We work diligently to educate service members on the benefits of a college education.”

W President Nora Miller and Maj. Gen. Janson D. “Durr” Boyles, Mississippi's adjutant general, were present at the ceremony held on The W's campus.

“We are excited about this partnership and proud to support our service members through the many academic programs The W has to offer,” Miller said. “Providing a high-quality, affordable education while maintaining an outstanding reputation in the region is an institutional priority for our university.”

Maj. Gen. Boyles added, “Readiness is our force's top priority and The W's tuition program will help to attract personnel who will staff our future state and federal missions. The students receiving this tuition benefit will contribute tremendously towards our preparedness and be among those ready to answer the call during state emergencies and overseas contingency operations.”

At the beginning of the year, The W earned the 2019-2020 Military Friendly® Schools Designation. Institutions that earn this achievement are recognized for their commitment to being better for veterans.

In the fall, The W was ranked No. 40 by U.S. News' Best Colleges for Veterans in the Southern regional. Colleges that make the list, were recognized for federal initiatives that help veterans and active-duty service members pay for their degrees.
