Former SHS player Smith on hot streak

Former Starkville High School baseball player Milton Smith II was locked in at the plate during a recent game for the Batavia Muckdogs in Class A Rookie League.

In six at-bats, Smith had five hits, scored three runs and drove in a run against the State College Spikes on Monday.

It was one of the best offensive games for Smith during his minor league career.

“I've been feeling good at the plate and I've just tried to put to- Smith gether some good at-bats,” Smith said. “I'm just trying to put a nice, good swing on it and not trying to do too much. That's really my mindset every game. I'm just trying to get on base any way possible.”

Smith has accomplished that feat more times than not as he leads the New York-penn League in on-base percentage at .468 and he also leads the league in batting average at .417.

With 30 hits in 72 at-bats and 13 RBIS, Smith has been producing well for the Muckdogs. He tries not to dwell on the numbers.

“I try not to look at those stats too much because they can be mind-boggling,” Smith said.

Smith was able to encounter a little bit of home recently when former Mississippi State catcher Dustin Skelton was assigned to Batavia.

The two players met a couple of days ago. “I told him I was from Starkville,” Smith said. “He said, ‘really?' After I told him that, we just kind of connected. I've been talking to him and he's pretty cool.”

Smith has enjoyed his time with the Muckdogs this season and said his minor league experience has been good.

He has a message for the people back home following his career.

“I want to tell everyone that I love them and miss them,” Smith said. “I thank you for your love and support.”
