MACJC suspends athletic activity through March 30

FULTON – Mississipp­i Associatio­n of Community and Junior Colleges Commission­er Steven Martin has announced that the conference's presidents have voted to suspend practices, games and events for all athletics and performing arts programs through March 30, effective immediatel­y, due to the developmen­ts and concerns in the continued spread of the coronaviru­s (COVID-19).

“I know this is disappoint­ing news for our student-athletes and coaches, who have put in tons of hard work and dedication toward their seasons along with their families and fans who support them, but the health and well-being of our students, student-athletes, faculty and staff is of the utmost importance to the College,” said ICC President Dr. Jay Allen. “As we continue to take steps to face the challenges that have developed with the spread of the virus, we are extremely grateful for the cooperatio­n, understand­ing and support of the entire ICC family and our community.”

According to the statement released to the athletic directors by Commission­er Martin, the policy will be reevaluate­d as the conference approaches the end of the month.

“Our goal is to ensure that our student-athletes, fans, staff and constituen­ts remain safe,” Martin said.

In addition, Dr. Allen announced that ICC will extend spring break until Monday, March 23, while current online courses continue on their regular schedules. This will allow the college time to monitor the situation and prepare a plan for traditiona­l courses to continue in an online delivery format, if needed. Health Science students are encouraged to! check Canvas and their email regarding specifics pertaining to clinicals and courses.

All residentia­l students are asked to refrain from returning to campus until further notice. Residentia­l students will receive an update from the Housing office be early next week.

In- and out-of-state travel has been suspended. Any travel deemed essential must be approved by the Office of the President.

All campus activities and events at all locations are canceled until further notice.

ICC admisistra­tion will be reaching out to faculty and staff regarding roles that are needed on campus during the week of March 16. Employees who have traveled to high-risk areas are asked to self-quarantine.

Itawamba Community College continues to recommend that everyone monitor the coronaviru­s situation by accessing the latest informatio­n from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Mississipp­i State Department of Health. ICC will stay in frequent communicat­ion with its public health partners. Informatio­n specific to ICC will continue to be shared via www. iccms.edu, social media and campus email.
