Tavern reopens for carry out

- By CHARLIE BENTON

A Starkville institution has reopened for to-go service after being out of commission since March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Starting Wednesday, Dave’s Dark Horse Tavern has opened for Tavern to Go-go carry out service. The iconic Starkville restaurant and bar closed in March early in the pandemic, and has remained shuttered throughout, even as other similar businesses reopened.

Tavern proprietor Dave Hood went into detail about his reasons for reopening.

“Several things played a part in this,” Hood said. “My staff and I had to feel like the COVID-19 protection protocols we put in place would be effective. Also, closing gave me time to renovate the kitchen in order to expedite to-go meals and we’re anxious to see how the new system works. Plus, the federal relief for my furloughed folk had expired so we all needed to figure out how to earn a living safely.”

Hood said he “couldn’t be more excited” about reopening.

“Customers are constantly inquiring as to when we’ll be open, which makes me feel wonderful,” Hood said. “I’m back prepping and cooking in my kitchen which I hadn’t really done since the 90’s so making them Tavern fare again is going to be a pleasure.”

Tavern to Go-go will take place from 5 p.m.-10 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Those wanting to order food can call 662-324-7001.

He said the Tavern would be offering a streamlined menu initially, omitting some items including chili and deep-dish pizzas. An up-to-date menu can be found on the Tavern’s website.

Hood said he was unsure when the Tavern would open for full service but said he would likely open up for some degree of outdoor dining in a few weeks.

“That’s a question I’ve thought about every day since March 14th and still don’t have the answer,” Hood said.

He further explained his reasons for keeping the tavern closed for more than six months during the pandemic.

“I made the decision to close first because we were busy over spring break and expected to be busy when the students returned.” Hood said. “The same concern applies to my decisions on how to reopen. I know we will be busy, and it has taken me until now to put a plan in place that I feel ensures the long-term survivability of Dave’s Dark Horse Tavern.”

Referring to other establishments in Starkville who had already reopened, Hood said they were “all in the same storm, but on different boats.”

“Please follow mask protocols and social distancing, and we’ll all get through this together,” Hood said.

He also said he had been working on the Tavern in the meantime, including increasing outdoor seating capacity, as well as renovations to the women’s bathroom and entrance area.
