Grinch visits Starkville with cookies

- By CAL BROWN

The Grinch came from his home on the cliff overlooking Whoville and visited Starkville.

Upon his arrival, some cookies awaited on Saturday.

Bribing him with some food and cookies to take home, Twigs Nursery and Landscape was able to host the cynical Grinch for a holiday event for the children of the community, where pictures were taken, cookies were eaten, and cups of hot chocolate were steaming.

Kandiace Brown, co-owner of Twigs, dug into how they were able to put together such an event while still being mindful of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We thought that since everybody is kind of limited on how much they can get out lately, and how much they can go out and do that we could just have the Grinch come here in an outdoor environment that’s safe with fresh air and plenty of room to kind of roam, spread out and be safe,” Brown said.

Brown also said that convincing Mr. Grinch to come was not as difficult as one would think.

“He was pretty easy to convince,” Brown said. “We promised him a free meal and some cookies to take home with him, so that wasn’t hard at all.”

During a holiday season in the middle of a global pandemic, it has not been as easy to celebrate as it used to be. That didn’t stop Brown from wanting to do something for the children of the community.

“Although these are different times that we’re in right now, the kids still need to have a fun Christmas,” Brown said. “Because it’s the one thing that they look forward to all year, and they definitely deserve to go and have fun at something like this. We had about 200 kids show up today and everybody was all good being socially distanced, so yeah, doing something like this for the kids, while there isn’t as much stuff like this going on, definitely warms my heart seeing them so happy. Everybody loves the Grinch, I reckon.”

This event was something that Brown and Twigs had been looking forward to ever since they had it planned with the Grinch.

“I just want to thank everyone who came out today to support our small local business,” Brown said. “We had a really great turnout. Most important thing about it all was that it was such a great time seeing the kids so happy and having fun, all while being safe and socially distanced. We were just glad that we could have something like this in a safe place that they could come out to for Christmas.”
