Trump impeachment trial moving forward in Biden’s first 100 days
America is in a new administration and President Joe Biden has signed two dozen executive orders but the impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump is set to resume the week of Feb. 8.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will send the article of impeachment with the charge of “incitement of insurrection” to the Senate on Mon. Jan 25.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch Mcconnell suggested putting off the trial until mid-february to allow the former president’s defense team time to prepare, and President Biden supported the delay as it would allow his new administration time to address crises left behind by Trump such as climate emergencies and the COVID-19 pandemic that has killed over 400,000 Americans since last year.
During the time between now and the trial, the Senate will make decisions on the schedule and trial format.
Biden is wanting to get in a
COVID relief bill as he fills out his Cabinet, but he is unable to get confirmations on his appointees if the Senate is busy with the impeachment trial.
Sen. John Barrasso (R-wyo.) said, “The basically stops President Biden in his tracks at a time when a number of Republican believe that President Biden ought to be able to
put a Cabinet in place.”
Since being sworn in Biden has enlisted FEMA in a plan for 100 mass vaccination sites, rejoined peace talks with North Korea and confirmed his Secretary of Defense which was lauded by one of Mississippi’s own.
Sen. Roger Wicker (R-miss.) voted to confirm Gen. Lloyd Austin to be the new Secretary of Defense.
Gen. Lloyd Austin is an extraordinary candidate who is well-qualified to lead the Department of Defense,”
Wicker said. “As a four star general, Gen. Austin led troops in combat in the Middle East. Now, as a civilian, he will use that experience to lead the largest department in the U.S. government.”
Over the next two weeks before the trial, Biden will be trying to confirm Cabinet members while the Senate doubles up in preparing for Feb. 8 while also getting certain COVID relief measures passed. It is sure to be a busy 100 days of Biden’s term.
