Annual Winter Blast Barrel Race is sure to bring excitement to this weekend

- By CAL BROWN

The Mississippi Horse Park will be the site for some good old-fashioned barrel racing this weekend.

Beck Farms Barrel Racing will have their 2021 Winter Blast Barrel Race on Saturday and Sunday with $3000 added plus prizes to be won.

Paula Touchstone is organizing this weekend’s barrel race along with her mother, Betty Thompson, and she gave a run down on what all will go down.

“On Saturday morning, we’ll have the exhibition barrels, which is basically where people who are participating can go in and practice before the show starts,” said Touchstone. “Around noon, we’ll have the buckaroo class, which is for little kids ages 10 and under. They can’t ride, this is just for them to have fun and play some games. After that, we’ll have what we call the ‘Fun 4D,’ anybody besides the buckaroos can enter with a $25 entry fee and a $250 added prize. Then we’ll have what we call the ‘Win More 4D’ at 2 o’clock. That’s also open to everyone, except the buckaroos, that has a $40 entry fee with a $1000 added prize. We have what we call a ‘4D Average Incentive Race,’ people who want to enter that will have to win their class on both days. Sunday’s schedule is basically the same thing.”

Touchstone said there have already been people who rented stalls for the weekend and she looks forward to the turnout.

“We already have people from surrounding states that have bought stalls and are coming this weekend,” said Touchstone. “We had our Winter Blast last year around January and it was only a oneday show, and we had one in October that was a two-day show at the Horse Park that we called the NFR Challenge, and we had a nice turnout for that. We hope to have a good turnout this weekend and anticipate several hundred runs a day. We’re very excited about
